Ahok Claims Flood Handling Preparations This Year Better

Jakarta Provincial Government claims they are ready to face the threat of flooding which predicted to hit the capital city during rainy season this year. Various preparations have been conducted, one of them is normalizing the rivers, reservoirs, and drains in every region.

I believe flooding this year would not be as severe as last year. We predict it would not happen more than a day

Acting Jakarta Governor Basuki ‘Ahok’ T Purnama ensures that flood management this year will be better than previous years considering almost all regional work units (SKPD) are hand in hand to face flooding.

“Flood management so far is okay, and rivers’ cleaning and dredging is better. That’s why I believe flooding this year would not be as severe as last year. We predict it would not happen more than a day,” he stated, Wednesday (11/12).

According to Basuki, some of the water pumps were not working during the flood preparation period. But after being checked, the damages were immediately repaired. He also admitted about the making of absorption wells which is not yet perfect and not yet completed in some locations. It is predicted that absorption wells to finish in 2016.

“Some of those absorption wells are not yet perfect. Next year, the locations which have not had absorption wells will be improved. Later, there will be one system between the river and the absorption well,” he uttered.

Based on the data of Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Board (BPKD), flood is predicted to hit 125 urban villages in the city, mostly located in West Jakarta and North Jakarta which passed by Ciliwung River, Angke River, Krukut River, and Sunter River. While in East Jakarta and South Jakarta, the proportion is balance.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) itself predicts that the peak of rainy season would happen in January 2015. Nine related SKPDs have been coordinated to handle flooding this year, namely Public Works Department, Social Department, Transportation Department, Health Department, Energy Department, Cleanliness Department, Parks and Cemeteries Department, Fire and Disaster Handling Department, and Satpol PP.
